Year Ender

Wednesday, December 31, 2008 0 Comments

So here is the 'traditional' year ender, an 'year that was' post!!

If 2007 was the 'Personal year of Travel' for me, then 2008 was 'Year of Achievement'. An year ago i wrote:
"2008 is going to be another important year as i appear for my CA Finals in May. So there is a chance that by this time next year i may become an ACA!!!"
and am glad that i managed to pull that off (with a lot of help from someone up in the clouds). So it seems only natural that 2009 is the 'International Year of Astronomy', everyone is in the lookout of that luck!!

Apart from that seriously gleeful event of passing the last hurdle of becoming 'ACA', the year was pretty much normal. 2009 is also going to be very important to me as i step out of V&S after completing the stipulated 3 years of Articleship training.

Enough with these personal scrap, time has almost run out in 2008. I wish all

A Very Happy New Year!!

Have a rocking 2009!!!

A Flash Game

Sunday, December 21, 2008 1 Comments

It has been sometime since i did any 'Action Script'ing in Flash. So, this weekend, i decided to revisit those old days when i used to tinker with the Script. Since i dont have any clue as to AS3, i decided to work with AS2 (that is Action Script, people. Not Accounting Standards). The other day i saw this copter game and i thought to make a copy of that game with whatever scripting i know. It was not easy, 7-8 hours' continuous work and finally i succeeded (almost).Anyway, there is nothing hi-fi about this game and at less than 10KB, i guess those dial up guys (like me) can also try. I know most you havent got a clue as to what am telling. So without further adieu, here is EVADE II!!.
You can download the game here.

2nd Anniversary

Sunday, December 14, 2008 3 Comments

Wow, that was fast!! Today Ledger is celebrating its 2nd Anniversary!! Time really flies and what an year it has been! So many happy memories to cherish. Ledger has undergone many changes during the past year from its layout to its contents. Character Sketch Series has been the talking point of this season. 'Examination Accounts' too attracted many readers. I have tried to post as accurately as i can without sacrificing much the 'fun' aspect.

Thank you all for supporting me and thank you all for expressing your thoughts on some of the posts. I hope you will be with me in days to come, although how uncertain they become.

The next year too is gonna be a pivotal one for me as i complete my articleship training. I have 91 days left in my articleship year and after that i dont know what will happen to Ledger (its original purpose ends with the completion of my Articleship training). However, i may extend the scope to keep this space alive!! :). Am too emotional to kill a Blog.

Once Again Thank You all For Your Support!!!

8th National CA Students Convention : A Look back

8th National CA Students Convention : A Look back
(presentation by Ranjith J)

A very warm good morning to all.

Respected dignitories on and off the dais and all my student friends,First i would thank Board of Studies, ICAI and Eranakulam branch of SICASA for organising Such a 'wonderful national seminar' and also for giving me an interesting topic to blog about.Thank you.

The paper am presenting today is "8th National CA Students Convention : A Look back", a very relavant subject in this age of global meltdown both financial and ballistic. First of all lemme give you a brief overview of what am going to cover in this presentation:

1. Introduction (not mine)
2. Evaluation of technican sessions
3. 'Cultural' Program, and
4. Conclusion

At this time i woould like to remind you all to set an alarm in your Mobile scheduled at 20 minutes from now (ie end of my presentation) so that you can wake up and proceed to the Dining hall.

Now lemme start.

1. Introduction

Friends, Ranjith Jayadevan once said 'there is a first time for everything'. Well, this is my first national
seminar and like all first timers i had great expectations (Budha was rigt when he said expectations and wants are the root causes of unhappiness) about the seminar. So when i landed in Eranakulam on that friday morning with 5 of my colleagues i can say that i was a very happy man. Afterll this kind of gatherings do give us 'exposure' and a chance to widen our knowledge base, right? The theme of the seminar was 'Prayan' and i would like to congratulate the organisers for selecting such a 'kool' word. It really embodies the true spirit of a CA Student. The long journey that one has to complete to get that coveted Membership certificate. There are 5 technical sessions , each being led by and expert in the subject and one Special session. I once again congratulate the organisers for selecting topics of great interests.

Now lets move on to the evaluation part.

2. Evaluation of Technical Sessions

A. Tech Session 1 (chaired by CA V Pattabhi Ram, FCA)
I really hoped that i could hear Mr Chairman speak about derivatives. But the usual delay in starting the function ensured that the session was cut short. Moreover the chairman 'allowed' the student speakers (2) to take control as the seminar is 'for the students'. Of the two student speakers Balacha Adi..etc Rao's presentation (Techniques of capital budgeting) was by far the best. I dont want to speak about the other person as recalling those moments take away all the happiness from my mind.

Rating : Average.

B. Tech Session 2 (chaired by CA Chinnasamy Ganesan, FCA)
The subject was AS. So i dont want to go into lengths here. I can say that Vaibhav 'etc' Kulkarni (Student speaker) who talked about the differences between Indian AS and IFRS was the 'star' of that seesion.

Rating : Average

C. Tech Session 3 (Chaired by CA Venugopal C Govind, FCA)
Now this session was interesting not because one of the student speakers was not able to 'present' himeself to make the presentation, but because i never though a CA could talk this fast. In a blink FEMA was over!!! I cant comment about what he 'presented' because i hardly heard what he was saying. The other student speaker was not bad.

Rating : Below Average

D. Tech Session 4 (chaired by AB Saravanaprasad FCA)
Now this was the best session of the entire event. The chairman and the student speakers (3) were excellent. The chairman of the session talked about Professional ethics and also gave some learning tips which i think was the most practical advise one can give to a CA student. Siddarth Naha made an excellent presentation about Audit risk (i believe he was the best student speaker of the event). Radhakrishna Das also made a sicere attempt to explain ESI and EPF laws. All in all a very good session

Rating : Excellent

E. Tech Session 5 (chaired by CA T Banusekar, FCA)

Now to tell you the truth i really thought of bunking this session because the topic was DT. But i am gald that i didnot as this was the second best session of the event. Both the student speakers were good though they were dealing with tedious topics like 'TDS' and 'Company Assessment' though i think Avinash Guptha who dealt with Company Assessment missed out on one big topic: MAT u/s 115JB. The chairman spoke about Internationl Taxation. He gave a birds eyeview of the subject and it was a great experience!! Another great session!!

Rating : Good

Overall Rating: Average (although the last 2 sessions were terrific, the first 3 compensated for it and so the rating)

Now i can see you people wondering, what about Special session? To tell you the truth i was not able to stand more than 5 minutes of it and then i got moivated by a pull to have a 'tea'. In short, i bunked that session.

3. Cultural Program

Now this was the real eye opener of the entire event. This session really helped me to widen my knowledge base. Friends, there is a general notion that CAs are boring and too serious. But if you were present there during the 'cultural' session i think you may change that opinion. I have to say, My UG college on College day or Arts day behaves much better. There is another urban legend that CAs are good only at number crunching. Well that too you have to change. CA Students possess all kinds of weird skills. One was good at imitating a Calling bell, some were
trying their hands is classical dance while others were exceptional experts in the art of making 'ballistic' missiles with nothing more than a piece of paper (talk about cost cutting!!). Am not talking about booing as its a Standard Operating Procedure to boo in such kind of functions. Well i could see the real 'culture' of the CA Stuent fraternity.

4. Conclusion

Now am almost at the end of my presentation. Friends, we are aspiring CAs who learn to utilise the available financial resources in the most optimum manner. So i hope while you are thinking of attending such a seminar, have some 'professional skeptisism'. It will do wonders for your wallet. I can see some alarms going off. So i think my time is up. I once again thank all of you for patiently listening to my presentation.

However before i go, i would like to share with you some pictures of the 'Cultural' Program.
Thank You all, adios.

PS: Brinjan got a new connection in Eranakulam. More on that later.

To Seminar National!

Thursday, December 4, 2008 2 Comments

A National seminar has been organised by SICASA at Eranakulam on 5th and 6th (ie tomorrow and day after). Usually i dont prefer going to these 'intellectual gatherings'. However the recent turn of events have sort of inspired me to break the longstanding tradition. Yup, am going to the Seminar!! That means i have to get up at 4 in the morning (now that part really hurts) so that i can catch the 5.45 Passenger to Eranakulam. I hope all the others who have agreed to come keep their words.

So will brief you all on Sunday!!!

December 1

Monday, December 1, 2008 3 Comments

So am back in Trichur now after a fortnight of train journeys and 'work' in Calicut. So its obvious that i was pretty happy today (i dont have to wake up at 4 in the morning!!! wew, what a relief!!). So the journeys are over, but that doesnt mean am off the 'bank-hook' now. I have to finish that report (that 80 page booklet) within a couple of days.

Tomorrow am off to a School to finish off the Audit started by me back in May and then continued by Anoop (when i had to leave for Hyderabad in June) and now to be finished off by me. I have become a believer of Karma now, what goes around does come around!!

0555 & 1605

Saturday, November 22, 2008 1 Comments

I bet you havent got a clue as to what those numbers mean. Well, those numbers are very much important to me these days. I have to catch the Tcr-Kannur Passenger at 05.55 AM to go to Calicut and also have to get in the Kannur-Ekm Intercity Express at 16.05 (4.05 PM) to come back to Trichur. Alhtough the morning commute isnt much of a problem although i have to wake up at 4, the return isnot that comfortable. The evening train is really crowded and most of the time you may have to stand for the better part of the journey. From the looks of it, it may take another 4 days to finish the assignment.

Captured In Pencil : Mr ---------

Thursday, November 20, 2008 1 Comments

Here is the million dollar question : Can you recognize this person? If you have worked in V&S anytime during the last year or so you may recognize him, i guess. So temme hows it looking!!! PS: This is not a 'Character Sketch'. I just drew it because i had time to do so :).

Character Sketch - Melvin

Wednesday, November 19, 2008 5 Comments

So here is the 4th one. I can see that many of you are surprised to see Melvin as i had earlier promised that the fourth one gonna be Anoop. However in light of the recent events, i thought i will fast forward a bit and 'sketch' mallu ahead of Anoop (The next one will be Anoop).

He will be the 3rd one to leave V&S within the space of 2 months. So here is my gift to him.

He is the gentle giant of V&S,
Always mad about bits & bytes and gadgets.

They say he was a shy lad,
But now only he can compete with AC in crackin' jokes.

Mallu can live even if we run out of Oxygen,
He just need an Interent Connection.

We will surely miss you,
Mallu.

Best of luck!!!

End Of Exams

Sunday, November 16, 2008 1 Comments

Perhaps the longest CA exam season in the history is coming to an end today. The closing honors belong to IDT. Although am not writing the exam, it is very much a matter of interest for me as many of my friends are appearing this time. Like i poster earlier, the attitude of some of those guys were anything but positive. In that sense am a bit disappointed. However some guys did attend all the exams and thus the 2 month long wait till results are declared begin. I wish them all the very best.

In the meantime, those who wish to share their thoughts of the exams (PCC or Final) are free to do so here..

PS: My Calicut journeys begin this week, so i do not think i will be able to meet 'em when the rejoin the office after the exams.

Sayanora Sreedevi !!

Friday, November 7, 2008 0 Comments

Last month it was Grita and now its Sreedevi; today was her last day in V&S. I wish her all the very best in her future endeavors.

Since Sreedevi has gone now, me the 'Senior' (which simply means Saturday=Working day) an is left with a handful of pending files. Hmmm, i have to work, really work, one of thesedays!!!

Now about exams: First group got over today and from the reactions i could gather i understand that 'Accounting' gonna be the decider in here. I have to say that one or two guys really disappointed me with their decision to skip some exams. I pressume they have good reasons for that. Anyways, wish all of 'em all the very best for the remaining papers..

Exam Feverrr & Some Animation

Saturday, November 1, 2008 0 Comments

Its Exam time again as the CA Final exams began today. PCC exams will start tomorrow. I wish everyone appearing for Final/PCC exams this time all the very best and i hope they clear all papers in flying colors.

As i had nothing to do today (well, exactly opposite to my situation 6 months back) i thought i will experiment a bit. So i decided to try my luck in bit of 'Stop motion animation'. Usually clay figures are used for this stuff, but since its not an easy inventory to obtain, i decided to use an aold, broken table lamp (also its very easy to animate a table lamp owing its flexibility). After an hour of 'hard' work i was left with this..

Click Here to see the video.

PS: I recommend Broadband connection for viewing the video. Please be patient till the movie is buffered.

Do let me know what u think..

Greetings

A Hint

Thursday, October 23, 2008 1 Comments

Initial responses to my latest character sketch were extremely positive. So now the question is 'Who Next?' This time i have decided to break the suspense: Next sketch will be of Anoop's and God have mercy on my soul when he (and, others) come back after the exams!!!
Last but not the least, Kudos to ISRO for successfully developing and launching India's First 'out-of-the-earth' Lunar Mission (Chandrayan - 1)!!

Character Sketch - Anjish

Sunday, October 19, 2008 4 Comments

Finally, the third character sketch is out. This time its Anjish and since this is the 3rd one, i have decided to change the method a little. You will see a 100% original doodle this time (not some collage of photos and drawing).

So what can i say about Anjish or Anjuttan as he is known in office??

Simple, humble and tries to stay away from trouble,
Generous, pious and obviously bit overweight,
More 'hairy' than Ishant Sarma,
Cracks jocks with ease about others (but those often backfire),

and a very, very good friend to have (I dont know how many times i have hitched a ride to Bus stand on those busy tax audit days)

Thats about it...

Hey friends, wanna add something about Anjish? post a comment and let the world know what you feel!!!

My Salute...

My Salute to the Highest Run Getter in Test Cricket History!!!

Okay. The initial formalities are over, now to business.. It has been 10 days since i last posted, the longest perhaps after Feb 07. Although i tried to  key in the words to the tiny word editor of Scribe fire on several occasions, lack of worthy material kept me away from that 'Publish' button. But now something has come along.

I think i have said it before: like any other good citizen of India, me too is a cricket fan and like most of them, am a Sachin fan. So, today, when he surpassed Brian Lara's record of 'Highest Run getter in Test cricket', its no wonder that i decided to break my short hibernation from blogger.

My salutes to the man who proved that you can turn 'stones to milestones'!!!!

Pooja Break

Tuesday, October 7, 2008 0 Comments

So the tax audits are over; office is slowly preparing for its 6 months long hibernation (untill the next tax audit season). In all these commotion, Grita and Sumithlal decided to disassociate themselves form V&S. A lot did happen in the past week. I was in Dena Bank trying to make sense of the 'Income & Expenditure Audit' and i have to say, am not fully aware of exactly what should i do even now.
Anyways, office has closed for 2 days, thanx to Vidyarambham!! I wish everyone a very happy 'Vidyarambham' !!!!! :)

A Farewell

Wednesday, October 1, 2008 0 Comments

The Tax Audit Season has officially come to an end. But i don't think i can relax a bit now as many of the audits are still classified as Pending. We managed to file more than 50% of the e-returns within the specified deadline.

Tax audits was not the only thing that came to close today. It was the last day in office for Grita Mam, the most experienced pair of hands in V & S.. The time has come to part ways and i wish her all the very best in Future.. V & S gonna miss her smile for sure in the coming months!

Sleepless NIghts

Tuesday, September 30, 2008 0 Comments

Its 2.24AM on 30th September and am still in office!!! I have almost completed the bangalore work, the only thing pending being the ITRs. I hope i can file those later today ;).

12.05 AM

Monday, September 29, 2008 0 Comments

So here i am, working!!! I think that will sum up the current situation. Some guys are in Office even at this hour doing the Graveyard Shift!!

Back At Den

, Saturday, September 27, 2008 0 Comments

At last reached home at around 9 in the morning. The journey was anything but comfortable. The bus in which i had booked ticket was cancelled at the last moment (this has become a K****** tradition nowadays) and they arranged a seat in another bus.
Anyways, i have to go to office in a shortwhile so that i can finish the Bangalore assignment by tomorrow evening.

Going Home

, Friday, September 26, 2008 0 Comments

In a few hours i will be boarding a bus going to Trichur. Now the game shifts to home territory!! Work here is almost complete, or i like to think so. I have to go to Office tomorrow as i have to finish it on Sunday.

A Marathon (Meeting)

, Wednesday, September 24, 2008 0 Comments

Wew... Am feeling bit tired now. The 6 Hr long meeting with Company head and Accountants and the 'lunch-less' evening is beginning to affect my mind, slowly but steadily. But am glad that a huge part of my work i.e clearing pending issues was finished by the end of the Marathon. However considering the amount of work to be done in the coming two days, i know that my happiness has a very short shelf-life.

Alone

, Sunday, September 21, 2008 0 Comments

Here i am, alone in office, that too on a nice Sunday!! Life is weird sometimes.. The main problem when working alone is that you wont get the usual dose of caffeine, and that you need the help of the security personnel, who are busy playing cricket, to get out of the building unless you have the ID card (unfortunately am a 'visitor'). So when you are here, you feel like you are in Jail (or house arrest) !!

Now about work: The work is progressing very lowly and am certain that its gonna take another 2 days, and am being optimistic here. The time is very short and i think such a 'crampy' schedule will affect the quality of the work.

St(r)ated!!

, Thursday, September 18, 2008 0 Comments

The bus was on the slower side yesterday, so i reached Bangalore only at 8 in the morning. The office is very near to Forum mall and i decided to walk to work!! It took me about 15 minutes to reach the office. About work, i just want to say that i have no idea of how i can finish it in 4 days!!! Just started the smallest of the 3 financials that i have to complete...

Back to Bangalore

Tuesday, September 16, 2008 0 Comments

Finally the decision has been made; am going back to Bangalore tomorrow evening. This time its the statutory audit of a software company. The time allotted for completion of work is very short considering the nature of the work to be done (that's what i think). So i believe my stay in Bangalore this time around is going to be hectic. As per current schedule, i have to come back by next monday.

Work=Home

Tuesday, September 9, 2008 0 Comments

Yesterday i didn't go to office, instead i chose to work from home. It turned out to be a wise decision as later that evening i came to know that almost all the PCs in the office were down that day due to a nasty Virus attack. Anyway, i also managed to complete the initial Financials although i had to put in some extra effort (it was not easy!!)

Month End Closure

Sunday, August 31, 2008 0 Comments

In these last hours of August 2008, the counter in Ledger's sidebar shows that i have 195 days of articleship left, still a long way to go! I managed to finish almost all the pending works that i had and now only one remains; and from the look of it, i will be in Bangalore during this Onam for finishing that pending assignment.
Last week i did not get time to doodle the next character sketch. However i intend to post the next one during this week. I think this 3rd one will be the last sketch of this season (the season finale) as i plunge into the tax audit madness. But i guarantee that 'i will be back' !!

Burning Midnight Oil

Sunday, August 24, 2008 0 Comments

Time is now 12.39AM and am still working here!! I have to finish two works by Monday and such extreme situations calls for extreme measures. :)
I think i will stop, feeling really tired now...

Character Sketch - Brijesh

Wednesday, August 20, 2008 5 Comments

Now its the turn of Brijesh to be doodled!! Actually i wanted to start the series with Brij, as he was the one who suggested the idea of 'character sketching'. But in a last minute burst AC overtook him.

So here are a few lines about Brij for those who do not know him..
He has got connections in some pretty 'High' places, but never boasts about those,
He is a work-o-holic, when he is 'auditing' a Restaurant,
...mmm.. what else??? I cant find words to describe him. May be not all 'Phenomenons' can be explained, may be you have to see to believe. So, guys, if you havent met him, dont waste your chance when you get one.

And here is the doodle...
So how was it? post your comments and suggestions...

New Look

Sunday, August 17, 2008 0 Comments

You may have noticed that Ledger has now got a brand new look. The title also has changed to Ledger 2.0. You can expect more changes in the coming days. This is the new, improved Ledger!!! So u may ask what so different about Ledger 2.0. To answer that, here are the updates i made:
  1. Layout: As said earlier, Ledger now has a brand new look.
  2. Navbar : You may have noticed that the 'Blogger Navbar' (i really dont like it that much) which normally resides at top of the page is now gone.
  3. Countdown: I dont know if i can call this an update, anyhow if you look to your right, you can see a clock counting down my articleship days. :)
Now its your turn, post your views and suggestions on the new look and so that i can improve upon the design and layout.

Tuesday, August 12, 2008 0 Comments

Oh Jesus!! that should be what those people in Jesus kuries will be saying about me these days. I cant blame them because it has been 4 days since i went there. I was busy with all the other works and i just could not find the time to go there. Yesterday i was in Guruvayoor and tomorrow its going to be 'Bright'. I dont know when i can go to Jesus and finish that off!!!

Initial Reponses

Saturday, August 9, 2008 0 Comments

The feedback i got for my first 'Character Sketch' was overwhelming. Almost everyone in the office liked the post and hence am going to post my next sketch soon. I dont know how AC is going to react when he sees the doodle i made.

Character Sketch - Ranjith AC

Thursday, August 7, 2008 7 Comments

Not so long ago Brijesh told me to widen the scope of Ledger and suggested that i include more interesting and funny posts. On that note i announce my plan to commence a 'Character Sketch' Series. Today am starting the series with none other than the great 'AC'.

AC is someone who requires no introduction. But here are a few lines for those who do not know him...

He will catch your attention from the moment he starts talking, It requires great skill to keep up with him when he talks!!.
He is the 'cool', 'roaming' man believed to be seen all around India except perhaps in Trichur, Kerala.
He comes here once in while like the 'Hally's Comet' and Like his heavenly counterpart, he makes sure that he does not crash with anyone (in office)
With AC around, there will be no shortage of pranks as he is the undefeated prankster in V&S.
I salute his ability to keep his cool in even the most difficult situations.
I admire his ability to start conversations from anything (except 'weather')
With AC around, there wont be a dull moment. I can bet my fortune on that!!!

and last but not the least, here is the doodle...

(published without the permission of AC)

Now to CS !!

Saturday, August 2, 2008 0 Comments

After much deliberation i have finally decided to go for CS. I have to enroll before Aug 31 so that i can appear for the June 2009 exams. I had always wanted to do CS and there wont be a better time to do it than now. I can start my studies after the Tax audit rush and i think i will have enough time to prepare for Inter.

Result Day - Part II

Tuesday, July 29, 2008 0 Comments

For the second time in this month, everyone in office is anxiously waiting for the results to be announced, this time its the PCE-PE II results (May 08 Exams). Melvin, Anoop, Hari, Saarika and Fadia have appeared for the May 08 exams and everyone of them is in good spirit. But i have to say that i noticed some tensed faces among them. The July 31 deadline for filing ITRs of Non-Tax audit assessees has also contributed to the rising mercury in Office (even in the midst of the Monsoon season).

I wish everyone all the very best !!

Interesting Feedbacks

Friday, July 25, 2008 0 Comments

I have reasons to believe that recently, may be by divine intervention, more people are going through my Ledger. And as a result am receiving more feedback which am afraid am not in a position to publish here, at least not yet. I request everyone of my readers to either post a comment to respective 'posts' or mail your comment to 'rjwarrier@gmail.com'.

Now to the happenings or non-happenings in the office. As usual i didn't do much work in previous 2 days though everyone else was busy with clearing the the ITR Flood.

Afterthoughts

Thursday, July 17, 2008 0 Comments

My life is slowly but surely changing, forever. As my friend Sujith put it, once u clear the exam everything changes. Its true, though i didn't believe it when he told that on a leisurely stroll. Studies are now just optional for me, no longer i have to worry about exams and classes. But it comes with a catch. Now i have new things to worry about like getting a good job and holding onto it.

Marklist

Here is my marklist!!

Cleared CA !!!

Past two days were the happiest and most 'expensive' days of my life so far. CA Final (May 08) results were announced on 12th and i cleared the exam, just by a whisker. I have not yet come into terms with the fact that studies are now just 'optional'. But i will miss those late night dates with books :)

Idle...

, Thursday, July 10, 2008 0 Comments

It has been almost two days now since we came back. We have done nothing so far except browsing net (and i found out that that too can get boring after four or five hours). He has not yet reviewed our work and hence we are unable to complete the audit. Now i really dont have the slightest idea of when we are gonna finish this... My results will be announced the day after tomorrow and thats the 'added disadvantage' !! P.S : Get the pics of my Hyderabad journey here ....

Am going back to Bangalore today by the 9.00PM KSRTC bus. I went to the office today and strangely i felt happy to be back there!! The results are due this Saturday and everyone in the office seems to be thinking only of the results!! I wont be in Trichur on Saturday (I think that has become a tradition as i have never been in Office when the results are announced).

A Very Short Vacation : At Home

Monday, July 7, 2008 0 Comments

I reached my home today morning at 7:30, after a break of more than a month (the longest ever). The travel was not that pleasant and i was not able to sleep because of the constant noise of the Bus. I will be going back to Bangalore tomorrow evening. I think i will be in Bangalore till the end of this week, after that i may also have to go to Bombay to finalize the work. I am planning to go to office tomorrow morning as i have 'quite a big' expense statement to settle.

Going Home

Saturday, July 5, 2008 0 Comments

Am going back to Trichur tomorrow evening, so will be reaching there on Monday morning. But the saddest part is that i have to come back to Bangalore on Wednesday morning (that means i have to leave Trichur by Tuesday evening). I think my work may take a couple of weeks to complete, may also have to go to Bombay for 1-2 days. So its going to be hectic from next week.

Bye Bye Hyderabad

Wednesday, July 2, 2008 0 Comments

Am going to Bangalore tonight, the bus, i was told, is at 10.30PM. I hope i can finish the rest of the work from Bangalore. My results are going to be publishe on 12th and i want to be back in Trichur by that time. I really enjoyed my stay here, it was fun (all the sight-seeing and all). However the same cant be said about the work though. Anyway it all adds to the experience part of the ledger, aye?

CA Day

Today ICAI celebrates its Diamond Jubilee, 60 years of "creating trust" !! So wish all a very happy CA Day!!! Hope they remit FBT for the "Anniversary Celebrations" !!! ;)

Golconda

Monday, June 30, 2008 0 Comments

Yesterday we went to the famous Golconda Fort, a 600 year old fort . It was a one hour bike-trip from the hotel. Though the bike ride was not a pleasant one, the trip was worth it, including all the 720 steps we had to climb to get to the top of the Fort. One could see the entire Hyderabad city from there. On our way back, we went to 'Snow world', the 'coolest' place in Hyderabad (may be in entire South India)!!. Playing on snow was a funny experience for me...

Home calling

Saturday, June 28, 2008 0 Comments

Finally the message has been delivered!! It took one week for 'You know who ' to figure it out that he wont be in a position to come here for finalising the audit. Hence we are going to Bangalore sometime in next week, hopefully on Wednesday. Our plans are to finish all the pending works in two days and the entire audit by the end of next week. But with You know who around, plans are always hard to execute...

Dine-Out

Friday, June 27, 2008 0 Comments

Yesterday evening we (Me, Hari, Sreenivas & Prasad) had a Dine-out. We reached the Hotel at around 8.45 and Indian Innings (India was playing Pakistan in an Asia Cup Match and Pakistan set a target of 300 for India to chase) was in its 10th Over. I have to say, it was the longest dinner i had till date!! We were there for more than 2 hours and by the time we exited the hotel, India had won the match with more than 8 overs to spare. Since i was sitting with my back to the TV screen, i always had to turn my head to watch the match and that resulted in a nasty neck pain. However it was a great match, some brilliant batting by the Indians!! But i have to confess here, i didn't really enjoy the dinner, may be because i was in a wrong 'gang of old aged guys' with the exception of Hari or may be because the whole atmosphere of that hotel was entirely opposite to my taste. The cricket was the only motivation i had to sit through the 'event'. But as the wise say, life is not always a walk in the park, aye?

Status Report

Thursday, June 26, 2008 0 Comments

Work here is slowly but steadily nearing its completion and i hope i can leave Hyderabad by next wednesday. It has been more than two weeks since i came here!!! Time really flies down here!! Hope Office doesnot have kept any more Outstation assignments for me in the near future. I need a break from all these travels and all. Moreover my CA Final exam results are going to be announced in Next month and future seems bleak.

Weekly RoundUp

Saturday, June 21, 2008 0 Comments

Another eventful week is coming to an end and from the look of it, next week is going to be even more eventful. Our work here is nearing its completion and it may take another week to finalise everything. That means i will be in Hyderabad for at least another week. Tomorrow we are hoping to go for a 'Hyderabad Sight Seeing Expedition' !! We plan to visit some historic sites in Hyderabad. Last Sunday we went to Ramoji Film City. We spent the entire day in there. It was a good experience. Since my colleague Mr Hari forgot to take the USB cable of his Digicam, i am unable to upload any pictures of our little adventure at this point of time. However once am back in Trichur (sometime in the near future) i will upload those pics.

Tomorrow we are planning to go for a little expedition of Hyderabad!! Film city, Charminar etc. I will post more details and if possible pictures on Monday...

At Hyderabad

Friday, June 13, 2008 0 Comments

We reached Hyderabad on Tuesday morning and travel by 'Airawat' was a pleasant one. We are currently staying in a hotel (Hotel Samrat) located near to office. Office is located in the outskirts in an industrial area. Work has gone smoothly so far and i expect i can finish it by the end of next week. This sunday we are planning to go out to visit the old city, Charminar etc.

Hyderabad Calling

, Monday, June 9, 2008 0 Comments

Owing to a sudden change of plans, the work i was supposed to do in Bangalore has been postponed sine di and my work has been rescheduled. So am going to Hyderabad (by the KSRTC Airawat @ 9.20PM) tonight with Hari for the Sri Sai statutory audit. As per the initial plan work there will take at least 2 weeks. I dont know whether i will be coming back to Bangalore after finishing Sri Sai. I have not yet been to Hyderabad, so looking forward to having a good time there!!!

Weekend prospectus

Friday, June 6, 2008 0 Comments

It has been 2 days since i reached Bangalore and still am finding it difficult to get around here. Travel seems to be the problem area. My work here hasn’t yet started and is still working with Hari, giving him a helping hand in what seems to be a ‘good’ assignment. He may leave for Hyderabad on this Sunday. Since tomorrow is a holiday for our office, we are planning to go to Lalbagh. On Sunday we have made plans to go to Nandi hills. Off late implementing plans has become a rare event, so I don’t know whether any of this is going to happen. I will update the details once am back in office.

At Bangalore

Wednesday, June 4, 2008 0 Comments

I reached Bangalore at around 7 and the journey was fine. So far everything has gone smoothly and the only difficulty i had is with "access  to net" !! :) Am staying with my Bhai at Madiwala. The daily commute may create some problems as its difficult to get around here.

Lonely traveler

Monday, June 2, 2008 0 Comments

Its journey time again (after a break of almost a year) as i prepare for my next assignment in Bangalore. I am going there tomorrow by the 9PM KSRTC bus. Hari is also coming with me, but he has another assignment there. From the discussions with Praveen i have gathered enough intel to conclude that its going to take some time (maybe up to a month or more) to complete. I am planning to stay with my brother as it seems like a much better option than staying at company guest house. It looks like i will be doing solo, for the first week at least, though it is extremely boring. The nature of the work is also different from what i have done so far and will be a good learning experience, or at least that’s what i want to think!!

Feedback : Brijesh

Sunday, June 1, 2008 0 Comments

Though it has been quite some time (almost 17 months) since i started posting to Ledger, feedback i received, like its number of readers, were very few. However, Brijesh, a brave soul has ventured to the unknown by posting this comment. What follows are his words*..

"Well abt the ledger huh!!!!!

There are different types of ppl in this wrld. Some doesnt share wht they feel with anyone. they keep it to themselves whereas there are others who share only among their best of frnds. But you are an exception. One is able to understand much more abt u through ur ledger. Its like an open book. Everyone cums to knw abt whts happening in ur life ...wht were u upto during a particular day. It helps you in a sense too....sometime later ..mayb aftr a yr or 2 when u want to relate a particlar event to an event in the past u can always fall back on the ledger....The memories wont fade away:)..it will remain forever in the ledger for yrs to cum...Ur articleship...all those happy nd sad moments....u can always remember those days laid back on ur seat after ur busy hours of wrk as a CA. Finally u may realise that those articleship days were the golden days of ur life .... One were u had all the fun and most importantly learnt all abt work. Tears may roll down ur cheeks when u think of all the precious frnds u had in the office:).... the off where u started ur work ...ur proff career....

wHT ELSE DO I SAY DUDE???? you can make it a bit more interesting...like u can write abt the current affairs ...wht u feel abt it? sumthg like tat ....Will write more abt this sumtime latr...cant write much because of time constraint...else i would hav gone on and on ....:)

Regards,

Brijesh"

Brijesh, thank you for expressing your thoughts about Ledger. You can expect some changes in this space soon.

To Bangalore

Tuesday, May 27, 2008 0 Comments

Finally i got the travel dates for the next Bangalore assignment. Today Praveen told me that i may come to Bangalore some time around next Wednesday. I may have to go to Hyderabad and Ranchi also. However thats not yet confirmed. It has been almost a year since my last outstation assignment and like all my previous ones this is also shaping up to be a hectic one.

Leisure Week

Sunday, May 25, 2008 0 Comments

I was in office during the past week and i can say for sure that i didnt do any worthwhile work during that period. But i guess if i had to go to Bangalore (which may happen sometime during this week) i shall have a truckload of tasks to complete within a short period.

School Days

Sunday, May 18, 2008 0 Comments

I was in Oriental English Medium School at Pazhuvil for the best part of last week. I have to say, it was a gerat experience. On Monday am going to Office to finish the statements.

Back to office

Monday, May 12, 2008 0 Comments

The exams are finally over and with that my 'vacation' has also come to an end. From tomorrow onwards i have to go to office. It seems that i may have to go Bangalore soon for an assignment there. In that case i think i will be out of here for at least one month. I will get the details once i rejoin tomorrow.

Indirect Taxes

Saturday, May 10, 2008 0 Comments

IDT was not as bad as i expected. I dont think i will fail in IDT. However i may not get the 60% am looking for an exemption. So whatever be the result in todays exam, i will have to do it again in November. Anyway, exams are over and in two days its going to be that same boring routine - 'Home-office-Home'. I plan to study Income Tax as soon as possible because i may not get enough time for the November exams because of the Tax audit schedule.

Income Tax

Todays exam, Income Tax was a total blast. The nail in my coffin. One thing is sure, i will never pass Income tax and so i will never clear Group 2. I have decided to start preparing from Monday onwards for the next exam in November.

MICS

Thursday, May 8, 2008 0 Comments

I am not satisfied with my performance in todays Exam - MICS. The strangest thing was that i was not able to recollect many points even though i had revised. SO now its almost over now for me, at least in this group. Even if i clear all the 4 papers i don't think i will get the group minimum mark, 50%. Another interesting thing is that i failed miserably in all the 3 papers which i thought i would do well (Accounting, MICS and Costing). Now the Tax Twins remain. I don't think i can do well in those.

Cost Management

Wednesday, May 7, 2008 0 Comments

The emotions i felt today after completing the exam were same as i felt after my Accounting exam. It was a tough paper and i dont think i will get the minimum marks (40%) for a pass. Now only 3 remian. I hope i can do well in those.

Corporate Laws

Tuesday, May 6, 2008 0 Comments

Corporate law was easier than i expected and i was able to answer all the required number of questions. I am reasonably certain that i will pass, but whether getting just the pass mark is enough is entirely another question. I am satisfied with todays performance as i was able to answer all the questions (i never thought i could do that because i had skipped a lot of chapters). Now First Group is over and (apart from Accounting) i believe i will pass in Other 3 Papers.

Auditing

Monday, May 5, 2008 0 Comments

Auditing was comparatively easy this time around. I managed to answer almost all the required number of questions in a relatively satisfactory manner. Hence i believe that i will pass this one. But the real problem is that if i fail accounting, result of this exam is irrelevant as i still have to write this paper again even though i clear it this time. I have to get 60 marks otherwise and quite frankly i don't think i will get that much.

Accounting and MAFA

Saturday, May 3, 2008 0 Comments

Accounting and MAFA exams are over and its just getting hotter with 6 back to back exams next week beginning on Monday. Accounting was a very tough paper (at least for me) and i don't think i will even get the minimum for a pass, 40 Marks. My expectation is in the range of 25-35 Marks. I completely skipped questions worth 21 Marks and i know for sure that i have given wrong answers for questions worth another 15 Marks. So i don't think i will get the pass mark. About MAFA, its exactly the opposite story. The paper was relatively easy one and i was able to answer all the required questions. I expect anything above 40% with a remote chance of getting 60%. Now Auditing and Law remain in Group 1.

1 To Go

Wednesday, April 30, 2008 0 Comments

Now just less than 36 hours remain for my exams. I was revising accounting today and its not going that bad. Its one of the 3 subjects in which i hope to perform well, costing and MICS being the other two. However since i lost my Amalgamation notes, its going to be very difficult for me to revise those portions. Still i think i can manage.
This i dedicate for those optimists who always manage to 'think positive'..

Phoenix..

Hope i manage to survive.

2 To Go

Tuesday, April 29, 2008 0 Comments

Another day has passed and my hopes are vanishing as fast as the speed of time. I was trying to revisit some DT chapters today and i can say for sure that it was an easy task. I just cant remember the numerous provisions of the Income Tax Act!!! I plan to revise MICS in the Graveyard shift, at least thats better than Income Tax. For tomorrow and day after i have to revise accounting. I can or may get exemption mark (60%) in that. Lets cross fingers and hope for the best.

3 To Go

Monday, April 28, 2008 0 Comments

I was revising Corporate law today. I finally got my notes back and it was very helpful. I was able to cover the chapters with bit more ease. I am planning to finish law today and revise some parts of DT tomorrow. After that i will have another 2 days for accounting.I think 2 days will be enough for accounting. Since i lost some parts of my notes , its gonna take bit more time than i originally expected. Still i expect to finish it off in 2 days.

4 Remains

Sunday, April 27, 2008 0 Comments

Its 4 days now. I am studying MAFA and it has been going well, contrary to my expectations. It will take another day to finish MAFA and after that i have to revise Accounting. Sudheer sir got busy with his work and that caused a dramatic shift in our plans regarding MAFA, Accounting and Costing. Anyway its going well. However yesterday i found out that my 'Accounting of Amalgamation' note was missing. That will make it very difficult to revise those portions.

Countdown: 7 Days

Thursday, April 24, 2008 0 Comments

Now a week remain to D Day. Studies are not going well. I have to revise Costing, MAFA and Accounting during the next week as i havent revised those, especially MAFA. Anyway its going to be a "terrific" exam, whatever the result be.

9 Days

Tuesday, April 22, 2008 0 Comments

It has come down to 9 days now. Today i herd that BJP has declared a nataional harthal on May 2nd. Now thats a "Lucky" start. Studies are not going good and am becoming more lazy after each day. Now its almost certain that i wont pass both groups.

20 More Days

Friday, April 11, 2008 0 Comments

I got the Hall Ticket yesterday. That reminded me that i have only 20 days left till exams. I have lowered my expectations/target considerably in light of recent events, though its a bad move.

തിരിച്ചു ചേര്‍പ്പിലേക്ക്‌...

Sunday, April 6, 2008 0 Comments

Unfinished Business

Thursday, April 3, 2008 1 Comments

All the rituals are over and the one thing that remain now is for me to study. I was not able to study during the last two days and that means am hopelessly behind my original schedule. My initial optimism is fast fading away and now i even doubt my chances in the May exams. But i have to try....

31 Days ..

Sunday, March 30, 2008 0 Comments

It has come down to a month now...and still am searching for ways to finish my studies in time so that i have an outside chance of pulling one of the biggest escapes of all times (in CA Exams)!!! I will loose at least 7 days (after providing 2 additional days for contingencies which have shown a habit of following me these days) of the remaining 31 days. That means i will get 24 days (3 for each paper). Now even if i devote at least 10 Hrs per day, i cant finish a paper in 3 days :( . I need to work hard, very hard, to complete the task in time.

Interrruptions

Thursday, March 27, 2008 0 Comments

Last few days were not exactly the happiest of days for me. As a result the pace of progress of my studies were extremely slow. I managed to go thru Excise Laws amidst all the happenings (I havent got a clue about CENVAT Rules though).

IDT

Wednesday, March 19, 2008 0 Comments

Finally, today i started IDT!! i have 10 days to finish it. Initial forecasts are good!! believe i can get ED, CD and Service Tax within that time. Many procedures are same. The substantial law itself is not that much (when compared to IT), but numerous case laws and Rules make the going difficult. I am planning to revise IT during the Graveyard shift.

Today's fortune: You are soon going to change your present line of work

How apt!!!

I was at home the past few days toiling with Cost management Theory. I have almost covered the syllabus. Past few days have been unusual in the sense that it has been raining in the evenings, occasional thunder providing a musical backdrop. Rain has made a mess of this year's pooram season. Arattupuzha pooram is on day after tomorrow, i hope rain doesn't interrupt it, after all its the biggest gathering of gods and goddesses in the world!!

Second Anniversary

Yesterday was my second anniversary of joining V&S and i (strangely enough) completely forgot it!! 2 years have passed since i joined V&S and quite an unbelievable journey it has been so far. I have changed a lot, learned a lot... My article ship registration date is March 16 and on March 15 next year my article ship will officially come to an end. last year has been an interesting one, but not as pivotal as this because am appearing for the Finals this time. I hope all is going to be well...

So initial impressions are very good.

Today's fortune: You will always have good luck in your personal affairs

I could use some good luck in my academic life too!!!

Past few days have been really amusing to say the least. We covered parts of QT (LPP, Assignment,CPM) at KVR and am glad to say that i havent got slightest idea about these except CPM. Back at home i managed to finish MAFA theory and have started Costing Theory. IDT, i haven't yet started!! I am embarking on one of the most ambitious plans to finish IDT within 10-12 days i.e before April. I know its bit over estimation of my abilities. But i have no other choice. I have to close all the papers before March 31st so that i get enough time to revisit all 8 papers.

56?

Thursday, March 6, 2008 0 Comments

I am desperately trying to devote more time to studies so that i can atleast cover all the papers. These cricket matches are not helping my cause. I lost almost 3 days because of the CB series finals ;) Right now am trying to study MAFA Theory!!! Its better than the problem stuff :)

Expecting Luck

"Today's fortune: Luck is coming your way" The way i see it, IDT is coming my way and no one in their right senses will call that "Luck". I have finaly started with ASs and its progressing nicely. I intend to finish it by 15th so that i get enough time to revise MICS.

Answering Heart..

"Today's fortune: Answer just what your heart prompts you"

If i do that am pretty sure that i am not going to pass the exam!! hehee... i think, one has to follow your brain and not the heart!! I am finding it very difficult to concentrate on my studies and as a result falling behind of my schedule. Sometimes music helps but more often than not it becomes another distraction. I really should devise some plan to overcome this difficulty, or else....

"Today's fortune: Society prepares the crime: The criminal commits it"

Today is a Historic day in many senses, the day i Crashed !!!. I attended the Costing crash class (conducted by Trichur chapter of ICAI) and bunked the same in the afternoon!!! I dont think thats a crime, though some of the elders may differ. I have to admit, it was a good class. Got an idea about PERT and Relevant costing. But the disappointing thing was that only 10 students showed up for the class and out of those 2 (me included) bunked afternoon class :).

Hand of Friendship

"Today's fortune: The time is right to make new friends"

Time is always right to make new friends. The important think is that whether the other person also wants to be friends!!! These days friendships begin and end in a "Hi" or "Hello". Its damn difficult to sustain one than to create one, i reckon.

After a 4 day break, i have returned to path of studies. I am planning to go to office tomorrow (after the class) to get the form signed by my Principal. I got the MICS (that i sent for eligibility) paper yesterday and i got 48 Marks (lucky that it was not below 45 which would mean resubmission!!!).

3 Idle Days...

I have not studied that much in the last 3 days (including today). I dont know why i am wasting time like this when i should be studying hard. Cricket, family functions...there are no shortages of reasons... I have a bad feel about the exams in May....

Announced!!!

Wednesday, January 16, 2008 0 Comments

November CA results were announced today and as expected it was a great occasion in V&S. Saji, Subramanian, Thulasi and Sreedevi cleared the exams. Unfortunately Grita missed out. However 4 out of 5 is a good result by any standard. I have to say that the results came as an inspiration for me to study hard as in 6 months time its my turn. Like, yesterday, i went to Cherpu today for 'studying'.

Result day

Tomorrow ICAI gonna announce the results of November exams. I hope everyone from V&S who appeared in the exams pass. I went to Cherpu today and was there till 5 in the evening. I am getting used to being alone!!

Tata Nano Unveiled

Thursday, January 10, 2008 0 Comments

Although not connected to the theme of the blog, i thought the following story is interesting enough to be posted here. Tata unveiled "The world's Chepaest Car" today, prized at Rs 100,000 (dealer prize) amidst cheers from admirers and jeers from environmentalists. It has taken almost 5 years to design and build the car (Nano). Ratan Tata, Chairman of Tata Motors said that the car will change the way India and world travel!!

Graveyard Shift

Tuesday, January 8, 2008 0 Comments

I have changed my study program with effect from yesterday so as to include Auditing in my daily schedule. I have decided to allot the 'Graveyard shift' (9 to 11 PM) exclusively for auditing and i have to say that (from yesterday's experience) it is not that bad to study auditing during that time!!! I am seriously considering to start my studies early morning(i.e at least from 5 AM) to finish the subjects in a timely and orderly manner!! Anyways i have put that on hold as a backup plan. I dont want to loose my sleep in the chilly winter mornings :).
